Two visits are required by Pennsylvania law.

First Visit(1 - 2 hours)

  • Consultation at least 24 hours before the abortion procedure.

  • Information required by Pennsylvania law.

  • Paperwork, lab tests, physical exam.

  • Answers to questions and instructions for procedure day.

  • Nonjudgmental counseling on all options.

  • Opportunity to discuss your decision.

  • Partial payment required at this visit.

Second Visit (2 - 3 hours or more)  [Surgical Only]

  • Review information and answer questions.

  • Physician performs abortion, about a 5-minute procedure.

  • Rest in recovery room.

Two choices for anesthesia [Surgical Only]

Local anesthesia alone

  • Numbing medication to ease discomfort.

  • Does not put you to sleep.

Local anesthesia with IV sedation

  • Numbing medication to ease discomfort.

  • Extra medication to put you in a light sleep.

  • You must be accompanied by a driver who waits for you in the waiting room.

  • You may spend more time resting in the recovery room.

  • Do not drive for 24 hours after receiving IV sedation.

After the abortion

  • Schedule a post-abortion exam for 2 - 3 weeks after surgical, 1 week after medication abortion.

  • Avoid intercourse until after this post-abortion exam.

  • Call with any problems via 24-hour phone number.

Warning signs - call immediately

  • You have a fever of 100.4' F or higher.

  • You have very heavy bleeding - soaking up one or more maxi pads in one hour or less.

  • You have clots larger than your thumb, with heavy bleeding.

  • You have severe or continuous cramping.

Payment

  • Partial payment is due at the first visit.

  • Balance is due the day of your procedure.

  • There may be additional fees for IV sedation, Rhogam if you are Rh negative, Depo-Provera and other contraceptives.

  • Insurance

Medical Assistance

  • In Pennsylvania MA will only fund abortions in certain cases of rape, incest or life endangerment.

  • Planned Parenthood offers reduced fees for Medicaid-eligible patients.

Insurance

  • Some plans will pay for abortion.

  • Bring insurance information with you to your first visit.

  • Planned Parenthood will verify coverage.

  • Planned Parenthood will bill your insurance company if your policy covers abortion.
